Nice trip recently. Put-in at Tonawanda Creek on Transit Rd, near 1st Niagara Bank. Plenty of ducks along creek as we floated lazily to the canal near Ship 'n' Shore Restaurant. Paddled eastward on canal to Lockport; didn't see a single powerboat. Used cell phone to call lock tendeer when we got to Lockport, and they opened promptly for us. Locking through rather than portaging around is a neat experience. (No fee, by the way.) Then a leisurely paddle to Widewaters to take-out.
For those looking for something different, this is about a 4-5 hour paddle. Very easy, though a little "lumpy" if a powerboat comes along when you're in the sections of the canal with steep cement banks. The locks are something that are unforgettable in a small canoe/kayak.
Regards,
